Lent 5 – Violence Untied by Love

John 19:1–16a

Jesus is mocked with a crown of thorns and a robe meant to humiliate. Power parades itself through cruelty, believing that force will secure order and loyalty. Yet Jesus refuses to answer violence with violence. His quiet presence exposes the fragility of systems built on domination and fear. This week invites us to see how easily we mirror the world’s reflex to fight, defend, and overpower. Christ reveals another way—the slow, courageous strength of love that refuses to dehumanize. The church becomes a community learning to embody non-anxious presence in a culture shaped by outrage and retaliation.
